The responsive web changed the default

Smartphones created a new design problem: websites needed to work on very different screen sizes. Mobile-first thinking became popular around 2009, and Ethan Marcotte established responsive web design in 2010 with fluid grids, flexible images, and CSS media queries.

Today, mobile-first responsive design is the normal starting point. It means designing the essential experience for a constrained screen first, then using additional space intentionally on larger screens.

Start mobile-first when

  • People need quick answers, directions, contact details, or opening hours.
  • The main task is reading, searching, browsing, booking, or submitting a short form.
  • Visitors are likely to arrive from social links, maps, or messages.
  • The page needs to work well during short, interrupted visits.

Design desktop-first when

  • Users compare large sets of information, charts, maps, or records.
  • The work needs multiple panels, dense tables, dashboards, or detailed editing.
  • People are expected to spend time researching, planning, or managing operations.
  • A small-screen version would hide essential context instead of simplifying it.

A hybrid system chooses by task

Do not decide that an entire business is “mobile” or “PC.” Decide what each page needs.

Works on mobile and PC

A merchant directory, a service introduction, a contact form, order intent, product information, news, bookings, and simple search.

May be PC-first or PC-only

A map showing one hundred islands at once, a detailed operations dashboard, a complex data editor, a large comparison table, or specialist planning tools.

Mobile often leads discovery. Desktop can matter more at the decision point.

Business behavior

More mobile visits do not automatically mean more mobile purchases

Device share, engagement, form completion, and conversion are different measurements. A business should measure each one separately.

Traffic is not the same as value

Mobile devices commonly bring a large share of visits because people check websites throughout the day. Desktop visitors can still be especially important for longer research, detailed comparison, administrative work, and some higher-value transactions.

Use your own analytics to understand this balance. Measure the device mix for visits, completed forms, purchases, repeat use, time on task, and support requests—not only page views.

A practical decision checklist

  1. What is the visitor trying to accomplish on this page?
  2. Can the essential task be completed comfortably with one thumb?
  3. Does the page need broad visual context, precise comparison, or many simultaneous controls?
  4. Which devices produce successful outcomes for this business?
  5. Can the mobile version simplify the task without removing essential information?

Choose the experience by the journey

A. Mobile majority

If mobile traffic continues growing, optimize mobile discovery, quick answers, maps, booking, and simple forms.

B. Two-device web

Mobile can lead discovery and casual tasks while desktop remains important for research, comparison, and complex work.

C. Business-specific reversal

If a site's own analytics show stronger desktop outcomes, prioritize the desktop journey without neglecting mobile access.

Global statistics tell you what is happening on the web. Your own analytics tell you what is happening to your business.

Different economic behaviors favor different devices.

Mobile may be best for discovery and quick action, while desktop can be more suitable for comparison, careful review, complex work, and purchase completion.

Build for both. Prioritize with purpose.

Mobile-first gives every visitor a usable foundation. PC-first pages can provide the space needed for complex work. A hybrid system respects both.
